ISLAMABAD: The newly installed PTI government has decided to resuscitate the Engineering Development Board (EDB), which was disbanded by the previous PML-N government after allegations of corruption surfaced.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce, Textile, Industries and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood who is leading the team is working aggressively on fully resuscitating and revitalizing the EDB, reports Express Tribune.

The new government is interested in reorganizing the EDB and make it a thriving entity for capacity building of the industrial sector.

Also, it intends to resuscitate the EDB after deliberating with stakeholders.

An official from the EDB said the newly installed government was interested in including the EDB in engineering focus areas with an aim to bring in latest technologies.

Its extent of activities will be increased to add civil engineering and infrastructure projects and the reorganized EDB would be a public-private partnership in which the most proficient professors, engineers and entrepreneurs will be selected, he said.

Also, the EDB had formulated an operation plan which saw the creation of four groups policy development group, sector development group, business development group and tariff group with a goal of concentrating on tariff rationalization, indigenization, deletion monitoring and vendor development.

But it was unable to help the industry in reducing the cost of doing business, increase competition, assist the domestic industry and generate a tariff environment for the export of engineering goods.

And the adviser’s team is said to be working on this and is conferring key industry representatives in this regard.

Moreover, the official shared “There are huge expectations about initiating a process to put the industrial sector on the right track of technology upgrade; integration with the world market is also another challenge that needs to be given due emphasis.”
