PTI taking credit for draconian cybercrime laws that PML-N govt passed: Marriyum Aurangzeb

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb launched a scathing tirade against Prime Minister Imran Khan and the ruling Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) government over recent amendments made to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 (Peca) through a presidential ordinance.

Marriyum said the government cannot hide its “fascist behaviour” behind these “draconian and black” cybercrime laws that the PML-N government had passed in its tenure.

“PTI should hide its fascist behaviour behind its own laws and policies not those that we passed,” the PML-N information secretary said while talking to the media on Monday.

“Like so many other PML-N projects, the PTI government also wants to take credit for the restrictive cybercrime laws that we had actually passed six years ago,” she added.

“Imran Niazi should know that these fascist, draconian, and black laws were passed by PML-N. Niazi and PTI should stick to its own fascism and not appropriate ours.”

Responding to a question on whether or not the amendments to Peca made by the PTI government be attributed to the ruling party, Marriyum replied in the negative and maintained that PTI has only built on the fascist policies already embedded in the cybercrime laws.

“Peca was already draconian. No matter how many draconian amendments you add to it, the credit should always be given to those who laid the foundation.”
