Soybean worth $150.72 mln, palm oil $1.384 bln imported

Soybean oil worth US$ 72.456 million was imported into the country during the last three-quarters of the current financial year, as compared to the imports of US$ 150.72 million from the corresponding period of last year.

From July-March, 2016-17, soybean oil imported into the country reduced by 51.90 per cent, as compared to the same period of last year, according to the data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

About 51,400 metric tonnes of soybean oil has been imported into the country during the last nine months, as compared to the import of 115,794 metric tonnes in the same period last year.

However, palm oil import into the country during the last nine months increased by 11.54 per cent as the country spent US$ 1.384 billion on the import of about 1,928,612 metric tonnes of palm oil to fulfil the domestic requirements.

About 2,048,018 metric tonnes of palm oil worth US$ 1.241 billion imported in first three-quarters of the last financial year, for tackling the domestic requirements.

Meanwhile, tea imported into the country swelled by 1.84 per cent s about 163,136 metric tonnes of tea worth US$ 411.364 million, as compared to the import of 133,335 metric tonnes valuing US$ 403.924 metric tonnes during the same period of the last year.

It may be recalled that the food sector’s imports during the first three-quarter of the current financial year registered an increase of 14.95 per cent, reaching 4.552 billion as compared the imports of 3.939 billion of same period of last year.
