FM Qureshi says joint efforts imperative to fight Covid-19, food insecurity

KARACHI: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has stressed on the importance of combined efforts required to counter the pressing challenges faced by the country such as Covid-19 pandemic, food insecurity, inefficient crop yields, locust attacks, and climate challenges.

The foreign minister, while addressing a video conference of the South Asian Association for Regional Corporation (SAARC) council of ministers on the sidelines of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday, mentioned that despite Pakistan’s maintenance of control on the Covid-19 pandemic within its confinements, it longs for a regional approach towards dealing with this crisis for the betterment of the people living in South Asia.

Qureshi proposed that Pakistan is prepared for hosting 19th SAARC summit in Islamabad and expressed that the barriers causing hindrance to this regional alliance’s motives must be eradicated to ensure it is impactful towards social and economic upliftment in South Asia.

The FM also paved way for peaceful resolution of outstanding disputes within the South Asian countries to enable regional development, economic growth, poverty alleviation and a higher standard of living.

Qureshi also claimed that Pakistan, as one of the founding members of SAARC, places great importance to this platform and regards the commitments entailed by the forum very highly.
