KP govt intensifies action against food adulterators

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority (KPFS&HFA) on Friday carried out a massive crackdown against food adulteration in various parts of the province.

The authority during a raid in a factory in Pand area of Swat recovered more than 1,200kgs of unhealthy cherry. The factory was using non-food colours in cherries, besides using a number of other hazardous chemicals for preservation purposes. The operation was carried out on the directions of FS&HFA Director General Suhail Khan, wherein the unhealthy factory was sealed.

According to the authority, action was also taken against food adulteration in district Mardan, where more than 350kgs of substandard spices and 50 litres of rancid oil were seized in a chips factory near Maqam Chowk.

In addition, the FS&HFA acted against food adulteration in Munda Bazaar, Lower Dir, where two factories were sealed for the use of washing powder in the sweets. The food safety team also discarded more than 1,000kgs of unhealthy ghee in the factories.

Furthermore, the KP FS&HFA checked the quality of milk in Dera Ismail Khan, and discarded more than 2,000 litres of adulterated milk.

Appreciating the actions of the field teams against food adulteration, DG Suhail Khan said provision of safe food to the people is the topmost priority of the authority. He said there would be no tolerance on quality of food and strict actions would be taken all those involved in food adulteration.
