‘Corruption allegations have long been used by powers-that-be to maintain hegemony,’ says Asif Afridi

RAWALPINDI – After the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) banned spinning all-rounder Asif Afridi from all cricket for a period of two years over violations of the board’s anti-corruption code, he has spoken out against the “bigger corruptions in the country”.

Talking exclusively with The Dependent, Afridi said that such allegations are decades-old ploys of the country’s “actual rulers”.

“You don’t need me to tell you where these corruption allegations come from. They have long been used by the powers-that-be to maintain their hegemony over institutions and resources,” the all-rounder told this scribe.

“If you think violating two PCB clauses is corruption, wait till you find out about the corruption of generals,” he added.

Afridi has been given a six-month ban for violation of PCB’s second anti-corruption clause, after initially being suspended in September for failing to report an approach “to engage in corrupt conduct”.

“They disqualify us over failure to declare such minor things, while they themselves are eating the whole country in front of everyone,” claimed Afridi.

“As long as we continue to be targeted, while they interfere in domains that do not concern them, Pakistan will never prosper.”
