Gas shortage, low pressure reported countrywide

ISLAMABAD: Citizens all across the country have lamented gas shortage and low pressure in several areas of the country.

Speaking to the media, civil society members complained of feeling cold all day and having severe difficulties in cooking food.

In Punjab, citizens complained about having to buy expensive LPG gas because of this and being forced to use compressors because of low gas pressure. “Due to lack of gas, houses, flats, hospitals, and mosques have become cold storages,” they added.

In Balochistan’s provincial capital, Quetta, low gas pressure was reported in Raisani Town, Arif Road, Mir Ahmad Khan Road, Najamuddin Road, Kawari Road, and adjoining areas.

In Karachi, residents of areas including Lyari, Chakiwara, Lee Market, Agra Taj, Garden, Shoe Market, Usman Abbad, Purana Golimar, City Railways Colony, Burns Road, Kharadar, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Bhains Colony, Malir, and others complained about the shortage of gas and low pressure. “We are forced to buy LPG cylinders and use wood for burning,” they said.

A day earlier, the government announced that it had arranged twelve liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes for the upcoming month of January.

The spokesperson said the city loads have increased by more than nine percent in SNGPL in the last week alone on account of a severe cold wave resulting in pressure drops. He said that SSGC faces similar drops in Karachi and Quetta.

Therefore, he said, the people are requested to use gas responsibly and report any domestic consumers using compressors, which is another major reason for pressure drops.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan will be moving 30 per cent more LNG molecules this January compared to January 2018, at the cheapest ever price of $6.34 for a peak winter month.
