50th anniversary of elections-within-90-days rule observed

The National Assembly on Monday observed the 50th anniversary of Article 224(2) of the constitution, amongst others.

The larger document containing Article 224(2) was passed by the National Assembly on April 10, 1973, authenticated by the president on April 10, 1973, and promulgated on August 14, 1973.

Former President Asif Ali Zardari, PM Shehbaz Sharif and foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto, amongst others, spoke at the event commemorating the setting up of a timeframe for elections.

“We are here today to commemorate these golden words: ‘When the National Assembly or a Provincial Assembly is dissolved, a general election to the Assembly shall be held within a period of ninety days after the dissolution, and the results of the election shall be declared not later than fourteen days after the conclusion of the polls,’” said Justice Qazi Faiz Issa, also at the assembly for the occasion.

“I swear I know this,” he added.

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, speaking at another event a couple of hundred feet away from the NA, said that the constitution is clear on the matter.

“Elections should be held in the Punjab, the only province in our unitary form of government,” he said.
